The disastrous consequences of a possible war between Russia and Ukraine were discussed by British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace in Budapest, stressing that it is important to de-escalate the tension in the region.
Wallace stressed that any Russian invasion of Ukraine would cause greater instability, rising fuel prices and migration flows.
At the same time, the UK Defence Secretary expressed his support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban‘s planned trip to Russia tomorrow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding “we need to de-escalate this and support Ukraine‘s right to sovereignty“.
For his part, Hungarian Defence Minister Tibor Benko noted during the same press conference that there is currently no need to deploy NATO troops in his country.
Orban, whose country is a NATO ally, has relatively good relations with Russia despite the tension between the Alliance and Moscow over Ukraine.
